Project Ideas
You're free to do whatever you want at the DevCamp -- that's what makes it fun. If you're looking for inspiration, though, here are some ideas. If you have one, just add it here (think about including your contact info so folks can reach out to you for collaboration if they want).
AJAX/AHAH business card widget
"I put a business card on my website with the HTML ID 'businesscard' in the DOM. In another element, I have a list of URLs to friends of mine who also have 'businesscard'. Javascript could be used to parse this list, visit those URLs, and scrape 'businesscard'. This way, friends of mine can promote themselves on my website with their updated content and no further action required on my part."
Emergency Responder Widget
"I volunteer at a fire and rescue station, and I'd like to create a widget with information that was useful for emergency first-responders - and branded for the fire stations, creating a brand status feel for attracting the young volunteers, and also able to be distributed in communities to spread the emergency-preparedness mission and need for donations and volunteering. Can email comments to pickering [at] designreinvented [dot] com."
Photo Gallery/Flickr Widget
Widget for websites that does the following:
- Creates a nice Flash-like (but not Flash) photo gallery with slide transitions
- Allows site users to submit their photographs for inclusion in said gallery
- Allows any user with a Flickr account to pull the designated photos from their account rather than uploading them multiple times to multiple sites
- Allows a site to pull any Flickr photo from a particular group that has been made public/has a CC license
("I know of widgets that do some of these things individually, but not any that do collectively all of these things.")
TRAC Widgets
Developer widgets for the super-cool TRAC defect tracking system:
- Standard defect status change stuff
- Source-control activity
- The ever-useful "timeline view" would make a cool widget
- Note that TRAC has RSS just about everywhere, making potential widgets pretty straightforward
Website Services Widget
Widget for services a website could add such as:
- IM with presence indicator for messaging to website owner and/or others on site
- Map mashup with web logs (and reverse DNS lookup) showing where visitors came from
- Analysis of web logs for paths visitors take through website, and numbers and lengths of stay on pages
- Simple polling, where website owner can pose a question and answers, to enter and display votes
